about sekou

Written by Ratpack Slim

Sekou (tha Misfit) wraps his stage persona around the guise of multiple personalities, and each one of them is at no loss for words. Even off-stage, Sekou isn't satisfied with wearing just one hat. His job titles include songwriter/producer, actor, schoolteacher, voiceover artist, emcee, and corporate speaker, among other things--all wrapped around his mastery of spoken word and his love of the stage. His booming voice alone is enough to hook a crowd; his ideas and content keep that crowd engaged.

From Day One of his love affair with poetry, Kou's been one to watch. He's a two-time National Slam Champion (once with Team Los Angeles and once as the Individual National Champ), and has been involved in some of the most ambitious poetry tours launched in the past five years, including The Underground Poets Railroad and Declare Yourself. He's had the opportunity to create shows and performances for luminaries from Maya Angelou to P. Diddy. He's rocked the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival for HBO. And of course, he's been a multiple-time performer on the seminal "Russell Simmons' Def Poetry," both by himself and with frequent collaborator Steve Connell - with whom he is preparing for the world premeire of their new play "The Word Begins" with a full run in October at the Signature Theatre in Washington D.C.

Not too many performers in any genre can be diverse and effective enough to bridge the gap between Nike executive presentations and ACLU political initiatives, but tha Misfit hops back and forth between these worlds with ease. In the rare instances you may see him standing still, he seems pensive and probably a bit tired. But get him talking about the power of the word and its potential for positive change, and he lights up. He'll be the first to tell you that he's got to get his hustle on.
